Well its nearly that time of year again and with the arrival of the warmer weather across Lancashire and the North West we all await the swarms of our black and white stinging friends!
Over the next month or so we can expect the first of the calls from our customer asking us to deal with bee’s. These are always a bit earlier than the wasp nest’s but once they start its amazing how many start to appear, all within the same week. Many of the early season calls will ask for assistance with wasps but will often, on inspection turn out to be wild honey bee’s. Any good pest controller will try to leave these un-harmed, we do this through both education or, if possible, through re-locating the bee’s not only where they can do no harm but hopefully where they can do a lot of good!
I have been told by a fellow pest controller in the South of England that he has already seen 2 wasp nest’s but up North we can expect to wait a little while longer. Last year was one of the quietest years on record for wasp calls, the weather earlier in the year killed off many nests. The weather came warm quite early which woke up many queens from their winter sleep, only for them to be killed off when the temperatures plummeted. I received 80 fewer calls to deal with wasp nest’s than in the previous year.
It was interesting though in that certain area’s continued to have good numbers of nests. I remember visiting a house in Preston that had a wasp nest in the chimney. After treating the nest I walked the length of the street and noticed at least 6 other chimneys with wasps swarming round. There was obviously something very attractive to wasps in the chimneys in that Preston street. Last year also saw large numbers of nests in the Eaves Lane area of Chorley with also a number of calls coming in from Cowling and Botany Bay areas as well. Who knows what 2013 will bring!
Calls for wasp nest removal Chorley will be treated as priority!
