False Widow Spiders UK – Should You Be Worried?
Every few years, false widow spiders seem to make headlines again. Newspaper stories, social media posts and alarming photographs often leave people wondering whether these spiders are genuinely dangerous or simply the subject of another scare story.
Having received many calls from concerned homeowners over the years, my advice is always the same:
Don’t panic.
In reality, false widow spiders are far less dangerous than many of the headlines would have you believe.
What Is A False Widow Spider?
The term “false widow spider” is often used to describe several different species of spider found in the UK.
The species most commonly discussed in the media is the noble false widow (Steatoda nobilis), which has gradually spread throughout parts of the country over recent decades.
However, there are a number of similar-looking spiders that are frequently mistaken for false widows.
One example is the missing sector orb-weaver spider, which is completely harmless and often misidentified.
Are False Widow Spiders Dangerous?
Despite some of the stories that appear in newspapers and online, false widow spiders are not aggressive hunters of humans.
They do not actively seek people out and they certainly do not travel around houses looking for someone to bite.
Like most spiders, they prefer to avoid contact with humans wherever possible.
In rare circumstances, a false widow spider may bite if it becomes trapped against the skin or feels threatened.
For most people, any reaction is similar to other minor insect bites and causes temporary discomfort rather than serious injury.
Why Do False Widow Stories Make Headlines?
Spiders tend to generate strong reactions from people, which makes them an easy subject for dramatic news stories.
Unfortunately, some reports can exaggerate the risks involved.
Over the years I’ve heard all sorts of stories from customers, including claims that false widows actively hunt people around their homes.
These stories simply don’t reflect how spiders actually behave.
Spiders are generally shy creatures that spend most of their time trying to avoid larger animals.
What Should You Do If You Find One?
If you find a spider that you believe may be a false widow, the best approach is usually to leave it alone or carefully relocate it outside if possible.
Spiders provide a useful service by feeding on flies, mosquitoes and other insects around the home and garden.
In many ways, they are natural pest controllers.
Most spiders found in UK homes pose little or no risk to people.
When Should You Seek Pest Control Advice?
Spider infestations are relatively uncommon compared to problems involving rats, mice, wasps, fleas or bed bugs.
However, if large numbers of spiders are appearing in a particular area, it may indicate an underlying insect problem that is providing a food source.
