Rat Problems in Preston?

Recently the newspapers have been full of stories of giant mutant rats. Have you seen any? No me neither! As always the headlines are more about selling newspapers that informing the public. I have though seen differences in rodent behavior over the last year or two. Rats and mice have without a doubt begun to develop a reluctance to enter bait boxes and have learned to avoid certain baits. This is of course quite normal and is simply what our ancestors did when they learned how to use fire, its simply a natural evolution.

Badly Done Pest Control

Though one of the main reasons for being able to learn is when pest control is done badly. When somebody undertakes pest control but does not manage a complete control then there is always scope for the remaining population to learn. It seems strange to me that I now can not buy creosote to treat my garden fence without the correct paperwork yet anyone can go to their local DIY shop and come away with a bucket of poison. I recently came across a mouse bait box in a DIY superstore that contained a poison that is really only suitable to be used in areas with a lower ambient temperature, yet there was no instructions or information on the packaging. I would use that particular bait in warehouses and garages, certainly not in a home. Due to warmer temperatures mice could recover from what should have been a fatal dose, in this way mice can of course learn both bait and bait box avoidance.

Hazards Pests Can Create

Of course anything that prevents or slows the treatment of a mouse problem can lead to problems, sometimes serious problems, for the home owner. On a recent job in Preston mice had chewed through a water pipe, completely flooding a bedroom. Although this is bad the consequences of the mice chewing through an electrical wire don’t bare thinking about…..a far more real threat that the mutant killer rats that the newspapers tell us about and we will never then hear about again.
